Benefit of adaptive FEC in shared backup path protected elastic optical network.

چکیده
We apply an adaptive forward error correction (FEC) allocation strategy to an Elastic Optical Network (EON) operated with shared backup path protection (SBPP). To maximize the protected network capacity that can be carried, an Integer Linear Programing (ILP) model and a spectrum window plane (SWP)-based heuristic algorithm are developed. Simulation results show that the FEC coding overhead required by the adaptive FEC scheme is significantly lower than that needed by a fixed FEC allocation strategy resulting in higher network capacity for the adaptive strategy. The adaptive FEC allocation strategy can also significantly outperform the fixed FEC allocation strategy both in terms of the spare capacity redundancy and the average FEC coding overhead needed per optical channel. The proposed heuristic algorithm is efficient and not only performs closer to the ILP model but also does much better than the shortest-path algorithm.

Protection Strategies in New Optical Networking Paradigms
To handle the increasing amount and heterogeneity of Internet traffic, a set of recent innovations have been proposed for optical backbone networks. One is mixedline-rate (MLR) network, where the wavelength channels of optical paths (i.e., lightpaths) can have a variety of capacities (10/40/100 Gbps) in a wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) network. Another is elastic network, where the trad...
متن کاملImpact of Elastic Optical Paths That Adopt Distance Adaptive Modulation to Create Efficient Networks
We propose optical path routing and frequency slot assignment algorithms that can make the best use of elastic optical paths and the capabilities of distance adaptive modulation. Due to the computational difficulty of the assignment problem, we develop algorithms for 1+1 dedicated/1:1 shared protected ring networks and unprotected mesh networks to that fully utilize the characteristics of the t...

We consider the share backup path protection (SBPP) and 1+1 protection techniques for CO-OFDM-based elastic optical networks. As an alternative to the shared backup path protection (SBPP) method, we develop a framework for dynamic provisioning of survivable services through the use of p-cycles to form a protected working capacity envelope (PWCE) within which dynamic provisioning of protected services is greatly simplified. With a PWCE, arbitrarily fast dynamic service demands can be handled with much less complexity (...
متن کاملAvailability-driven optimal design of shared path protection in WDM networks
Availability, defined as the fraction of time a network service is operative, is a key network service parameter. Dedicated protection increases availability but also the cost. Shared protection instead decreases the cost, but also the availability. In this article, we formulate and solve an integer linear programming (ILP) model for the problem of minimizing the backup resources required by a ...
